iUSCAN Launches the iUSCAN Canadian Leadership Council to Advance Intestinal Ultrasound Across Canada

New council brings together all Canadian iUSCAN members to expand access to intestinal ultrasound for people living with IBD

iUSCAN has launched the iUSCAN Canadian Leadership Council, a national body that brings together all Canadian iUSCAN members to advance the use, quality and equitable availability of intestinal ultrasound in IBD care across Canada.

Nov 5, 2026

TORONTO, November 5, 2026 — The Intestinal Ultrasound Group of the United States and Canada (iUSCAN) today announced the launch of the iUSCAN Canada Council, a national body that brings together all Canadian members of iUSCAN. The Council will advance the use, quality and equitable availability of intestinal ultrasound (IUS) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care across Canada. The announcement coincides with the inaugural iUSCAN Canada Fellows Course and a Canada IUS cocktail event at Meeting of the Minds in Toronto.

IUS is a non-invasive, point-of-care tool that lets clinicians assess and monitor Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in real time, often at the bedside and without sedation or radiation. Canada has been at the forefront of IUS adoption. However, access, training and funding still vary widely from province to province. The iUSCAN Canada Council will coordinate national efforts to close those gaps.

The Council builds on the work of the Canadian Bowel Ultrasound (CANBUS) group. CANBUS's executive, together with Council founders Dr. Joëlle St. Pierre, who serves as Council Chair, and Dr. Cathy Lu, forms the founding Canadian Cabinet, which leads the Council.

The Council's work is organized into three committees:

  • Clinical Implementation & Advocacy: with representation from each province, this committee works toward sustainable funding for IUS, including a national approach to remuneration and advocacy for improved patient access. This committee looks to address some of the major quality improvement (QI) and resource utilization questions.

  • Communications: keeps Canadian members connected, informed and engaged and provides a platform for collaboration and partnership across the country.

  • Education: working closely with the iUSCAN Education Committee to deliver IUS training, mentorship and continuing education in Canada, including a new all-Canadian iUSCAN Fellows curriculum.

The Council is also committed to equitable access to programming in both English and French, including developing French-language iUSCAN content.

"Intestinal ultrasound has changed how we care for people living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It lets us see what is happening in the bowel right at the point of care and make treatment decisions on the spot. But today, whether a patient can get IUS depends too much on where they live," said Dr. Joëlle St. Pierre, Chair of the iUSCAN Canada Council. "The iUSCAN Canada Council brings together clinicians from coast to coast to change that. By training the next generation of Canadian gastroenterologists, working with every province on sustainable funding, and building programs in both English and French, we want IUS to become a standard part of IBD care for every Canadian patient."
