iUSCAN Launches a Fellows' Intestinal Ultrasound Training and Certification Pathway
iUSCAN partners with the AGA to launch a training and certification pathway for adult and pediatric GI fellows and advanced IBD fellows in North America.

A Collaboration Between iUSCAN and the AGA
The Intestinal Ultrasound Group of the United States and Canada (iUSCAN), in partnership with the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (CCF), is pleased to introduce a structured Intestinal Ultrasound Training and Certification Pathway for Fellows. This training will provide fellows with an iUSCAN certification in intestinal ultrasound after successful completion of the one-year curriculum.
The program offers a rigorous, competency-based curriculum for rising advanced IBD fellows (beginning advanced IBD fellowship July 2026) and senior adult or pediatric gastroenterology fellows (beginning 2nd or 3rd year of fellowship July 2026), providing the practical skills necessary to perform and interpret IUS for the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Curriculum & Program Timeline
The pathway combines online learning, in-person instruction, and longitudinal mentorship. Participants are expected to complete the certification within one year.
Phase 1: Foundations
Self-paced eLearning modules (must be completed prior Phase 2), available starting April 2026.
A half-day hands-on training launching the cohort at DDW 2026.
Phase 2: Longitudinal Independent Clinical Practice & Coaching
Virtual and in-person coaching sessions (in-person coaching where available at the trainee’s institution).
Logbook-based independent practice (minimum of 100 independently performed exams over 1 year).
A second hands-on half-day training session at the Crohn’s & Colitis Congress (CCC) 2027.
Phase 3: Final Knowledge and Competency Certification
In-person hands-on competency assessment and online knowledge examination at DDW 2027.
Optional: Extended in-person training is available for those requiring additional supervised experience prior to certification.
Attendance Requirement: Applicants must be available to attend DDW 2026, CCC 2027, and DDW 2027 to complete the pathway.
Application Requirements
Priority will be given to applicants who are pursuing advanced IBD training followed by seniority in fellowship, have consistent access to a dedicated ultrasound machine, and demonstrate a commitment (with a detailed, specific plan including blocked clinic time and dates, and local support) to completing at least 100 exams locally over 1 year.
Required Materials:
Letter of Motivation: Describe your interest in IUS, your detailed plan to meet certification requirements, dedicated ultrasound equipment availability at your site with access to a high frequency linear probe and low frequency convex probe, and whether a current IUS practitioner is available locally to mentor you.
Letter of Support: A formal letter from your Program Director or Division Chief confirming institutional support and your ability to complete the required 100 examinations based on their review of your specific completion plan and attend the mandatory hands-on sessions.
Program Cost: This program is free of charge for accepted trainees. Note: If accepted, participants must become iUSCAN members (membership is not required at the time of application).
