iUSCAN launches an IUS training and certification pathway for trainees in Canada

iUSCAN is launching a pathway for Canadian fellows to train and become certified in intestinal ultrasound (IUS). The IUSCAN Canadian Fellows Course is a hands-on educational program designed to introduce Canadian gastroenterology, pediatric gastroenterology and advanced IBD fellows to IUS. Participants will receive foundational instruction in IUS principles, image acquisition, and interpretation through a combination of expert-led lectures, live scanning sessions, and case-based discussions. This introductory course serves as the entry point into the longitudinal IUSCAN Fellows Training Program for selected participants pursuing competency in IUS.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a current Canadian Adult or Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellow or Advanced IBD Fellow in good standing.

  • Demonstrate a strong interest in incorporating IUS into future clinical practice.

  • Have institutional support, including a letter from their Program Director or Division Chief.

  • Be able to participate in the hands-on training sessions and commit to the requirements of the longitudinal IUSCAN Fellows Program if selected.

As places are limited, applications will be reviewed competitively based on demonstrated interest, institutional support, access to ultrasound equipment and mentorship, and commitment to completing the IUSCAN training pathway.

Curriculum & Program Timeline

The pathway combines online learning, in-person instruction, and longitudinal mentorship. Participants are expected to complete the certification by May 2027.

  • Phase 1: Foundations

    • Self-paced eLearning modules (must be completed prior Phase 2), available starting October 2026.

    • A half-day hands-on training launching the cohort at Meeting of the Minds November 2026 as above.

  • Phase 2: Longitudinal Independent Clinical Practice & Coaching

    • Virtual and in-person coaching sessions (in-person coaching where available at the trainee’s institution).

    • Logbook-based independent practice (minimum of 100 independently performed exams from November 2026 to May 2027).

    • A second hands-on half-day training session at the Crohn’s & Colitis Congress (CCC) 2027 on January 23rd in New Orleans, LA.

  • Phase 3: Final Knowledge and Competency Certification

    • In-person hands-on competency assessment and online knowledge examination at DDW 2027.
